COI awards Buchanan new deputy chief executive post

COI Communications has appointed Peter Buchanan to the newly

created post of deputy chief executive.

Buchanan, who joined COI as director of advertising in 1994 and became

director of marketing communications two years later, will take on extra

responsibilities involving the strategic and operational running of the

organisation. The move will see him working more closely with the chief

executive, Carol Fisher.

"This is an important step in the development of COI as an

organisation," Fisher said. "Peter is one of the most respected figures

in the industry and has made an extremely valuable contribution to the

business."

Since 1997, Buchanan has been involved in the development of COI's

marketing communications group.

Buchanan this summer oversaw the appointment of eight agencies to COI's

newly formed media planning roster: Zenith, MediaVest, Manning Gottlieb

Media, PHD, Optimedia, Unity, The Media Edge and Naked. He is currently

reviewing the organisation's creative agency roster.

"COI has expanded but we still have exciting plans and new services in

the pipeline," Buchanan said. "I'm looking forward to playing a full

part in the future development of the organisation."

The appointment comes at a time when COI is under the microscope over

the increase in its adspend under the Labour government. Conservative

MPs have complained that COI spend in areas such as police recruitment

and the working family tax credit was bumped up before this year's

election, handing an advantage to Labour.
