John Birkin, the director behind some of the UK's best-known comedy shows including The Fast Show and French and Saunders, is joining Blink to direct commercials.
Birkin, who has worked in television since 1977, has directed for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4.
James Studholme, the managing director of Blink, commented: 'I think there are very few laugh-out-loud comedy directors in London. John is someone I have known about for a long time and I have tried to persuade him before. He's now serious about doing ads.'
Blink recently lost a high-profile director, Ivan Zacharias, to its former sister company, Stink.
Birkin directed Chef!, starring Lenny Henry, which was nominated for a Bafta, as well as The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, which won a Comedy Award for Best Comedy Series. His most recent TV work was The Victoria Wood Christmas Special.
He has directed a few commercials in the past, making his advertising debut in 1994 with a Cadbury's Boost commercial. It was produced by the TV specialist Tiger Aspect Productions, and starred Reeves and Mortimer.
Tiger Aspect subsequently launched Concrete, a commercials production company headed by James Bradley, through which Birkin directed a Sky Digital ad and, most recently, the 'big Dave' commercial for Pot Noodle through HHCL & Partners.
However, Concrete folded in November after just two and a half years in business.
