Rogue Films has taken on Rupert Wainwright, the British director of

Michael Jackson’s History video, rumoured to be the most expensive video

ever made.

Wainwright’s ad work includes a recent spot for Reebok International,

made through Leo Burnett in New York, which starred Michael Chang

playing tennis against the Great Wall of China.

At the time, Wainwright was working through Propaganda, but at the start

of this month he signed up in the US with Sony Pictures Entertainment’s

new TV commercials production venture.

Mark Andrews, the managing director of Rogue, said: ‘Rupert Wainwright

works at the high-style end of the business and has already worked on a

number of major projects in the US.’

The director broke into US commercials with a Reebok campaign in 1993,

and has also made ads for Isostar drinks. He graduated from Oxford

University, and went on to study in Los Angeles, from where he launched

his career.

Wainwright said: ‘What I do well is comedy, action and effects. I don’t

do any one specific genre - moving between ads, features and my own

projects keeps me fresh.’
