BMP DDB has become the first UK agency in 11 years to land a

British Design and Art Direction advertising gold, taking the coveted

pencil for its Doritos sponsorship idents at the awards ceremony in

London last night.

Andy McLeod and Richard Flintham, the copywriter/art director team

responsible for Doritos, had already won a silver in the television

sponsorship credits category for the work. The pair also took a silver

for cinema campaigns with their controversial work for the Ministry of

Sound which urged young people to use their vote.

American agencies walked off with three of the five other TV and cinema

advertising silvers. Goodby Silverstein won with its Hewlett-Packard

’babysitter’ in the TV commercials up to 30 seconds category; FCB San

Francisco took a pencil for its Levi’s ’doctors’ spot, and Wieden and

Kennedy won for its Nike ’good versus evil’ film - both were in the

television commercials up to 60 seconds category.

In the same category, M&C Saatchi took a silver for its Whiskas

’insights’ commercial, while HHCL and Partners walked off with the sole

silver pencil for TV commercials over 60 seconds, which went to the

Blackcurrant Tango ’St George’ spot which has already won the gold award

at the British Television Advertising Awards and has been voted

Campaign’s Ad of the Year.

Leo Burnett won the sole poster silver for its Mercedes ’lottery balls’

ad. The agency’s ’skidmarks’ press ad for the same client also took a

silver in the consumer magazines (colour) category. This success, coming

after ’skidmarks’ cleaned up at this year’s Campaign Press Awards, makes

it all the more painful that Burnetts has been forced to resign the

account because of client conflict overseas.

Saatchi and Saatchi was awarded the campaign silver pencil in consumer

magazines for its Club 18-30 ’flying colours’ work. In a successful

night for the agency, Saatchis also took a silver in the public service

and charities category with its Army radio campaign, a silver in the

mixed media direct marketing campaign category for the same client, and

Alexandra Taylor and Nik Studzinski won silvers for art direction, again

for the Army.

McCann-Erickson took the remaining major advertising silver, its Sega

’virtua cop’ ad winning in radio (40 seconds and over). Once again,

there was no silver awarded for copywriting.
