D&AD releases award nominations for 2001

Leo Burnett, Mother and Cliff Freeman & Partners stand the best

chance of picking up Pencils in the television and cinema advertising

category at this year's D&AD.

Burnett's 'bear' for John West has received a nomination, while its work

for McDonald's, including 'estate agent', has received a further two


Mother's QTV work and 'what is it?' for Emap On Air each received a


Cliff Freeman's work for Fox Sports Net, which was directed by Traktor

and includes a spot with a man diving off a high cliff on to a rock

surface, has picked up four separate nominations in the category.

The nominations are the result of a judging process that considered a

total of 21,702 entries.

More than half of the entries came from overseas, a trend that will see

D&AD compete more directly with the International Advertising Festival

in Cannes.

David Stuart, the president of D&AD, said: '2001 is proving to be a

fantastically diverse and strong year for the awards. Entries are higher

than ever, with the number of nominations up from 103 in 2000 to 122

this year.'

Saatchi & Saatchi's work for Monster.com, already a big winner at the

Campaign Press Awards, looks set to do well at D&AD, which takes place

on 30 May. Work titled - 'I'm not your bitch', 'kiss it' and 'take me

instead' has picked up three nominations in the Writing For Advertising

category. The radio work also picked up a nomination.

In the Television and Cinema Advertising Crafts category, Leagas

Delaney's 'player', directed by Tony Scott through RSA USA, Lowe Lintas'

'hero's return', directed by Frank Budgen through Gorgeous, and WCRS'

'hold up' directed by Chris Palmer, also through Gorgeous, each received


In the music video category, work through Godman, directed by Vaughan

Arnell, for Robbie Williams' Rock DJ, received three nominations. The

video, which showed Williams peeling off his skin to please adoring

female fans, was created by Fred and Farid, a French team recently hired

by Bartle Bogle Hegarty.

In the product design category, Apple Computer has secured three

nominations. Peckham Library and British Airways' London Eye have both

picked up nominations in the Environmental Design & Architecture


In the direct marketing category there are four nominations: HHCL &

Partners' 'commentator' for Britvic Soft Drinks; HPT Brand Response's

'turn on your voicemail' for Vodafone; Mother's 'ChrisChristmasRodriguez

Christmas card'; and Euro RSCG Tatham's 'shoebox' for Physicians for

Human Rights.

There was a 90 per cent increase in entries in the interactive and

digital media sector. Consumer websites shortlisted include requiem

foradream.com by hi-res, m-three.com by Paris France, levis-icd.com by

Tomato and mtv2.co.uk by Digit.
