The launch of Britain’s first sports-only daily newspaper, Sport

First, is back on the starting blocks again, and is attempting to secure

pounds 4.5 million backing through a formal private placement.

The newspaper, a broadsheet, will be published six days a week and cost

40p. It will have between 24 and 44 pages of sports coverage, together

with world news headlines and television listings. Four dummy issues

have already been produced.

Sport First’s publisher, Keith Young, has assembled a five-strong

management team, including an advertising director, Peter Burt, and a

sales and marketing director, Nick Thompson. Young has now put pounds

750,000 behind the project, but as yet there are no other confirmed

investors.

The newspaper originally planned to launch in 1996. A new launch date

will not be finalised until finances are in place.
