DIARY: BBC's shy and retiring football commentator goes for self-publicity

The BBC knows its pundits are crucial strings in its World Cup coverage bow and quite justifiably decided to concentrate on the round-table verbal gladiators in its Manga-style ad campaign to promote the football-fest.

But perhaps what Auntie wasn't so quite prepared for was the sheer confidence, nay arrogance, of its ex-players, and lords of the studio. Perhaps the Beeb should've taken heed from the tone of DFGW's World Cup campaign, which immortalises Lineker, Motson, Wright and Hansen in the style of oriental heroes in a large poster.

While all the others are a paragon of modesty, Wrighty's lucky checked shirt, diamante earring and gobby comments make him a more flamboyant commentator. In true Footballers Wives-style, he's ensured his nearest and dearest - and the rest of the town in which he lives - are reminded of his animated idol status. Yes, the retiring wallflower has ordered a 48-sheet poster to be put up in his garden.
