Diary: Crash and burn - Jhan Rushton, sales development manager at She, warns against sudden bouts of amnesia

Jhan Rushton had just joined Top Sante from Slimming and was keen to impress. He was due to make his first agency presentation and was to be accompanied by his new publisher, Jacqui Elliott. So he put together a super argument as to why Cadbury should advertise its low-calorie chocolate drink in Top Sante. He organised the argument on a flip chart and even took it home so he could rehearse.

be accompanied by his new publisher, Jacqui Elliott. So he put together

a super argument as to why Cadbury should advertise its low-calorie

chocolate drink in Top Sante. He organised the argument on a flip chart

and even took it home so he could rehearse.



Come the big day, he knew he couldn’t fail to make an impact. But as

they sat in BBJ’s reception waiting for agency supremo Duncan Hamilton,

Rushton realised something dreadful. He broke out in a cold sweat when

Hamilton’s door opened and they were ushered into his office.



As they took their seats he stammered: ’I’m afraid I’ve forgotten my

presentation.’ He pulled a battered copy of Top Sante from his briefcase

and bravely tried to wing it, grimly hoping his memory lapse wouldn’t

matter.



It did. He didn’t get the business. But he hasn’t made the same mistake

since. ’It’s ingrained in my DNA now. I always check I’ve got everything

before I leave,’ he says. ’However, I once got to an agency and couldn’t

remember the combination to the lock on my briefcase.’
