DIARY: EVENING OUT AT ... THE CORPORATE ADVERTISING MEDIA POP QUIZ - Greg Hughes relishes an evening of exhibitionism

7.45pm The Cock Tavern The glamorous venue for the evening’s media pop quiz is buried deep in the guts of Smithfield meat market. On arrival, the quiz is about to start and quizmaster Richard Clarke of Mansfield Lang is trying to quieten a boisterous crowd.

pop quiz is buried deep in the guts of Smithfield meat market. On

arrival, the quiz is about to start and quizmaster Richard Clarke of

7.50pm We manage to attach ourselves limpet-like to the Davies Little

Cowley Fiddes team. Unfortunately for them, this means they get the

benefit of our limpet-like knowledge of music.

9pm Halfway stage Thanks to the sterling efforts of senior copywriter

Ray Phelps, we’re not quite last. Heated discussions include: ’It’s

’huff, huff, puff, puff blow you away’, not ’huff, puff, huff, puff blow

you away.’’

9.15pm Break Refuel with chips, pies and more beer. DLCF’s art director

Mark Tortolini explains the pitfalls of working on the creative for

Harlequin books - better known as Mills & Boon. The rather un-Mills &

Boon-like self-proclaimed ’girl with no knickers’ from 141, who has been

drunkenly co-commentating all evening, invites one of her team-mates to

meet her in the toilets.

9.45pm Quiz restarts With our minds now ’well-oiled’ machines, our team

starts picking up the pace. My contribution to the comeback consists of

recognising Westlife’s Flying Without Wings from the soundless

video.

11pm Despite our rocky start, we’ve stormed back to take seventh

position.

But there’s been a shock tie for first place and that can only mean one

thing: a dance-off to the Quo.

11.15pm The tied pair - CDP and MindShare - eye each other. Suddenly,

they’re off. Powerful performances in the boogie department from both

sides but the shirt-shedding air-guitar antics of CDP finally win the

night.
