DIARY: PARTY TIME WITH ... EXCITE - Greg Hughes can’t compete with the new-media massive

7.45pm The White Hart - All right, so it’s not the party venue, but this boozer just down Drury Lane is showing the European Cup clash between Man United and Real Madrid. We watch the ’mighty’ Red Devils’ captain slide in to beat his own keeper at the near post. ’Keane No!’ is suggested as tomorrow’s Sun headline.

8.50pm Millennium Bar - Drag ourselves away from the footy and go in

search of excitement. Down in the basement the dancefloor is already

full - the new-media massive are shaking their thang.

9.30pm I chat to I-level’s Faye Hui and Shivani Gurtu. ’Do you find

people don’t like talking to you once they find out you’re a

journalist?’ they ask. That’s the end of that conversation, then.

10.30pm A few lager-tops later and my Media Business buddy Dom starts to

get frisky on the dancefloor, wowing the ladies with his gyrating

snake-hips.

10.32pm The dancefloor starts to empty - clearly no-one wants Dom’s

talents to show up their lack of dancing prowess.

10.45pm A man in a pair of women’s shoes races past, closely followed by

another man who is similarly attired. They continue their low-speed

chase around the bar before disappearing into the men’s toilets.

11pm We bump into Excite’s Dela Quist and Fiona Evans, deep in

conversation at the far end of the bar. The music is so loud Evans has

to scrawl her name on my fag packet. In brackets she adds ’drunken bird’

- perhaps in the mistaken belief that this makes identifying her any

easier.

12am Quantum New Media’s Natasha Benson explains the joys of working in

the online sector - it’s young, cool and the place to be at the moment.

Damn, I’d better get my coat.
