7.00pm The Commonwealth Institute, Kensington Now where is this
party? Ah - the huge Hollywood-style illuminated MediaCom TMB sign gives
it away. It’s so big it needed permission from the Civil Aviation
Guests are greeted by clowns on stilts and MediaCom’s white-suited
ringmaster - vice-president Allan Rich - and led into the Commonwealth
Institute, which has been transformed into a big top. One-and-a-half
thousand revellers from agencies and media owners mill around the
full-size helter-skelter, dodgems, palm readers and coconut shies.
I bump into Mirror senior sales executives Roland Boakye and Mark
Richardson, who are knocking back the unlimited white wine.
9pm Free vodka bar I discover Future Publishing’s promotions and
lifestyle manager Paul Lanzarote and MediaCom’s radio chief Mike
Hope-Milne sniggering in a corner.
10.30pm I strain to chat to MediaCom’s super-tall deputy broadcast
director David Jowett, while TSMS account director Mathew Williams and
group account director Simon Lent sway gently.
10.30-12.30am Anyone’s guess really.
12.30am The dancefloor is in full swing when the DJ pipes up: ’Can
whoever has stolen a pair of crutches please return them, as this bloke
can’t walk?’ (Strangely, no-one else remembers hearing this.) London
Marathon runner Hope-Milne falls over as he is leaving and twists his
ankle. Time to grab my free bag of warm chestnuts and stagger home.
Friday 9am Rumour has it that Lanzarote woke up covered in red wine next
to an unidentified warm body - and he probably wasn’t the only one. Top
marks MediaCom, same time next year?
