Diary: On the QT ..

One question has been burning across adland: has MCBD's anti-smoking fish hook ad worked on the agency's chain-smoking charmer Jeremy Miles? Well, yes. He's cut back from a 20-a-day habit to just five, and he no longer puffs away in the agency ...

It seems that Bartle Bogle Hegarty has Hollywood links. Mel Exxon, who works at the agency with her husband, Richard, is the cousin of Lord of the Rings star Orlando Bloom ...

A certain DDB comedian has made an amusing observation about the nicknames of the present and previous chief executives. While working at Lowe, Paul Hammersley acquired the name of "Buzz Lightyear" because of his resemblance to the Toy Story character. He has now been replaced by "Woody" - not only the nickname of Stephen Woodford, but Buzz's best friend in the movies. Diary wonders if the agency's next chief executive will resemble Mr Potato Head or a green dinosaur ...

It's good to see Diary's remarks on M&C Saatchi's considerable pull with the national press (Diary, 26 January) didn't stop the agency getting coverage in the Media Guardian this weekend for its new venture called Accelerator - an ad agency off-shoot that will deal with private equity-owned brands ...

Some of the more perceptive IPA staffers have noticed the dress code of Hamish Pringle, the director-general, always seems to match that of the president, David Pattison. As long as he has been tie-less, so too has Pringle. Now, the Belgrave Square toilers are waiting to see if the DG will be ordering his tailor to run up a few black suits of the kind favoured by Moray MacLennan, the president-in-waiting ...

Diary also wonders if the industry has any wrestling fans. If so, have they spotted an ex-wrestling champion in the recent Options ad by Lowe London? In the speed dating-based ad, one of the eligible Options flavours is none other than D-Generation Xer, and former tag-team champ, "Bad Ass" Billie Gunn aka The Ass Man.
