The recent tabloid stories about the reluctance of the good people of
Sunderland to buy Sugar Puffs now that Kevin Keegan, boss of local
footie rivals, Newcastle, is advertising them, has struck a chord here
at the Diary.
For some strange reason, the idea of buying a Sharp telly, video camera
or even personal organiser thingy is anathema around these parts.
Similarly, the idea of purchasing a Citroen or virtually any Nike-
branded product. But, I’m sure all three clients are more than happy
with the brand awareness brought to them by association with the
Manchester United first team, Ryan Giggs or Eric Cantona respectively.
And I’m sure that no-one at all declines to buy said brands on the
grounds that everyone outside Old Trafford hates Man United.
