Being head of advertising for BT must be one of the most-lunched jobs in
Britain. Future incumbents will have to go some to match the lunching
stamina of Robert Bean, but Sholto Douglas-Home is keeping his end up.
Who better then to become a restaurant critic?
Sholto’s been sending questionnaires to people likely to have visited
enough eateries to take part in the Zagat Survey, ‘one of the best-
selling restaurant guides in North America’ (it says here), which is
compiled from customer opinion.
Why he sent one to the Diary’s editor, who scarcely gets beyond Pret a
Manger, is a mystery, but it explains why Sholto doesn’t listen to your
schmooze in the Ivy - he really is studying the menu. That’s his excuse,
and we’re going to borrow it.
