You would think there might be such a thing as putting one’s money where one’s mouth is in this industry, but not so down at J. Walter Thompson, it seems.

You would think there might be such a thing as putting one’s money where

one’s mouth is in this industry, but not so down at J. Walter Thompson,

it seems.

Robert Harwood-Matthews, an account manager, recently had the

enterprising idea of rounding up a bunch of people to do a sponsored

bungee jump for NABS.

He contacted a bungee company called Cunning Stunts (yes, that old

chestnut), arranged for it to turn up with the necessary elastic and

machinery, and drummed up an 18-strong posse of caring JWT volunteers.

However, after much chivvying and badgering of others to sign up, it

emerged that he was not going to jump himself. Dark mutterings were

heard bush-firing through the agency, along the lines of Harwood-

Matthews being ‘lily-livered’ and ‘ yellow-bellied’, implying that he

knew something the others didn’t.

‘It’s the art of good management,’ he told us. ‘Plus, I’m absolutely

bloody terrified of heights.’
