Editorial: C4 has earned its right to govt subsidies

Channel 4 is the Waitrose of TV - not the biggest operator, but definitely the classiest. Last week, it announced a pre-tax profits hike of almost 5 per cent for 2005 - not bad, given the state of the TV ad market. Given its success, it is tempting to question Channel 4's right to government subsidies. However, it is this very success that means it should be protected from the problems facing all broadcasters.
