Editorial: HSBC win has Hoare smiling after Bates

It's good to see a smile back on Toby Hoare's face. The 1999 merger of Young & Rubicam and Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe left him without a role.

Fate dealt him an even more cruel hand when he had to clear up what was left of Bates Europe after the collapse of its Cordiant parent.

Now his hard work as the leader of the WPP team formed to capture HSBC's £350 million account has paid off. "He is a lot better than he thinks he is," a former colleague once said of him. Doubtless one of the biggest account wins of modern times will have done his self-confidence no end of good.
