– Emap elan has appointed Carmel Hayes from the BBC as director of new media.

Hayes currently works at the BBC as a cross-media senior project manager with responsibility for strategic planning and implementation of multi-media projects.

At the BBC she worked on projects including Computers Don't Bite and Webwise. Prior to the BBC Hayes worked in marketing at the magazine publisher, Quarto. She also worked as a designer on magazines like J17, Harpers and Queen and Good Housekeeping.

Hayes' first tasks will be the launch of Red Direct OnLine, the expansion of newwomanonline.co.uk and development of escaperoutes.net. She will report to Dawn Bebe, women's media director.

Bebe said: "Carmel is clearly a talented and resourceful new media player. Her love of magazines and vision for their potential on the web appealed to us. We believe the combination of Carmel's skills, our brands and our creative and commercial talents will be a powerful force in the new Millennium media."

Emap elan's magazine portfolio includes Elle, New Woman, Elle Deco, J17, Minx, more! and Red magazine.

Emap launched New Woman Online in 1997. It is located at www.newwomanonline.co.uk and offers content, community and e-commerce features for 25- to 35-year-old women.
