- Microsoft has appointed Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper to co-ordinate its advertising across Europe, Africa and the Middle East in a move aimed at creating a more consistent image for the software manufacturer.

Euro RSCG pitched with its sister agency Evans Hunt Scott and the media agency Mediapolis for the business, which is expected to be worth around £5 million in billings and to be concentrated in Europe. Joshua and Publicis Technology also pitched.

Microsoft has historically used separate agencies across Europe for its product advertising, while all brand advertising has been done through its global agency, Wieden & Kennedy. But the company has not done any brand advertising outside the US since last year, when it began fighting a US government law suit over alleged anti-competitive practices. The latest move signals a more consistent approach to product advertising outside the US.

Chris Pinnington, managing director of Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper, said: "We are delighted to be given this vote of confidence from Microsoft. Their marketing skills are second to none and it is great to be chosen as their European partner."

A Microsoft spokeswoman added: "Euro RSCG has won the account for all advertising needs arising out of Microsoft headquarters for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. However, the full scope of the account has not yet been decided."

The business is separate from Microsoft's £7 million UK account, which Euro RSCG picked up in 1994. The Euro RSCG network also handles Microsoft in several European countries, including France and Germany.
