England football's governing body has turned to social media to boost participation in the sport. A Facebook application will encourage fans to show their support for England by joining the ‘Official England Squad'.

The app, created by Dare, allows users to create their own Official England Squad shirt, complete with name and number, and then post it as their profile picture.

England players such as Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard will take numbers 1 through to 23 when the app launches today (1 June).

Other numbers already allocated include 24 by Stuart Pearce, 25 by Ray Winstone, 30 by Stephen Fry and 67 by Nick Clegg. Special numbers include 66 by the Bobby Moore foundation, 2012 by The Olympics and 2018 by Back the Bid.

FA head of marketing Simon Freedman said: "We want to win the (first) unofficial social media World Cup on Facebook, and drive greater connection with our consumers."
