According to ITV News, several readers have backed a call for her return. Meanwhile, messages have been posted by consumers on Oxo’s own Facebook page, including one that purports to speak for the "General Public" and asks that the ads be run at Christmas.

Helen Scanlan, posting on ITV’s Facebook page, wrote: "I think it would be a wonderful gesture to her family if the old Oxo adverts were screened over Christmas. Lynda didn't make it to Christmas but she remains in the nation's hearts. Prayers to her family and friends."

The post has proven very popular with other Facebook users and, at the time of writing, had attracted 715 ‘likes’.

Bellingham, who died yesterday of bowel cancer, starred as the mother in the long-running Oxo campaign, which focused on a family at mealtimes.

She appeared in 42 TV ads between 1983 and 1999, all of which were created by JWT.
