The Galaxy five-station radio network, which is part of the

Chrysalis Group, is introducing a series of advertising initiatives as

part of a drive to link radio to the internet.

Galaxy has introduced a weekly three-hour radio show, targeting

twentysomething listeners, which covers internet shopping and the latest

user-guide information.

The online games retailer Gameplay.com is to sponsor the programme and

its products are available on the Galaxy website.

Nick Button, marketing controller of the Galaxy Network, explained: ’Our

programming is designed to encourage sponsors. People can listen to the

show, log on to our site and buy Gameplay products online. There are

also competitions and giveaways and these will be announced on air.’

Button said the new show had already attracted interest from more than

100 new internet companies who are looking to radio as a means of

building their profiles.

’Business is booming for Galaxy and many companies are starting to

consider radio as an advertising proposition for the first time. Instead

of taking traditional spend away from Emap and squabbling over the same

customers, we are encouraging a new breed of advertisers.’

Galaxy also confirmed that from early next year, advertisers can buy

airtime over the internet. Don Thompson, commercial director of the

Chrysalis Radio Group, said: ’Galaxy has adopted e-commerce as an extra

sales tool for selling advertising time over the web. Customers will be

able to log on to the Galaxy site 24 hours a day, seven days a week and

place an order for airtime.’

Galaxy Online is also to launch a merchandise web page in January. A new

range of clothing and accessories will be available to buy direct from

the site. Galaxy intends to use to the page to increase its consumer

presence and attract advertisers. Clients will be able to advertise on

banners on the site and Galaxy is researching the demand for new

partnership deals. The banner ads will be sold by Galaxy’s existing

sales teams.

There are five Galaxy Network stations: 101 Bristol and Cardiff, Leeds

105, Manchester 102, Galaxy North East in Newcastle and Galaxy 102.2

Birmingham.
