- Chris Evans's Ginger Group, which owns Virgin Radio, appears to have been thwarted in its bid to acquire the Daily Star newspaper from United News & Media.
It is understood that the proposed deal -- which only emerged this week but was put to United before Christmas -- would have seen United take a 16 per cent stake in Ginger for about £20 million.
A report in yesterday's Sunday Telegraph quoted a Ginger insider as saying the deal, which should have been made public on 26 February, was now "stalled."
United's Express Newspapers division, which publishes the Star, denied there was ever any talk of a sale, but admitted that the two had spoken about 'working together' on the Star. In a statement, Nicholas Rudd-Jones, managing director of Express Newspapers, said: "Ginger Media made an approach to the management of Express Newspapers to work together on the Daily Star. Nothing firm materialised."
