Goldfish, the joint venture credit card owned by Centrica and HFC
Bank, is talking to agencies about the launch of brand extensions.
Goldfish credit card advertising, which features Billy Connolly, is
handled by TBWA GGT Simons Palmer, but it is understood that the
advertising for the launch products would have to be handled by another
agency because of client conflict.
TBWA holds the NatWest and Equitable Life accounts.
Grant Miller, the Goldfish marketing director, said: ’We’re very happy
with TBWA but that doesn’t mean they’re guaranteed launch work in the
future.’ He said he was quite relaxed about client conflict but hinted
that the agency’s other financial services clients were not.
Precise details of the Goldfish brand extensions are being kept under
wraps, but launches under consideration include mortgages, pensions and
ISAs. Such products present more of a direct conflict to both NatWest
and Equitable Life than the Goldfish credit card.
It is understood that talks with other agencies are at an early stage
and that no shortlist has yet been drawn up. The launch of the new
products is being orchestrated by the Goldfish managing director, Mike
Virgin Direct, a former TBWA client with pensions, PEPs and life
insurance products, shifted its pounds 10 million advertising account
out of the agency last year (Campaign, 4 December, 1998) following the
agency’s pounds 50 million NatWest account win the previous June.
Goldfish has more than 900,000 customers who get money off their gas
bills and TV licences when they use the credit card.
