Govt committee calls for News at Ten return

ITV could be forced to reinstate News at Ten after the Department

for Culture, Media and Sport’s Select Committee called on the

Independent Television Commission to use its powers over the

broadcaster.

In a statement issued at a press conference on Wednesday, the select

committee declared: ’We recommend that the ITC requires ITV to reinstate

News at Ten.’

Gerald Kaufman, the chairman of the committee, added: ’It will be a very

important test of the ITC as a regulatory body whether they abide by

their own criteria and require ITV to put right, in the view of this

committee, what they have put wrong.’

His comments have riled advertisers and the commercial TV industry while

casting doubt over the role of the ITC.

John Hooper, director-general of the advertisers’ trade body, ISBA,

said: ’ITV is a responsible commercial broadcaster with sincere ambition

to improve both audience and customer satisfaction. ISBA believes it

must remain free to tackle the challenges it faces through whichever

programming strategy it identifies as most effective.’

The committee said its call for the return of News at Ten was based on

evidence that the evening news audience on ITV has fallen significantly

below predictions.
