Hakuhodo has hired its first planning director as part of efforts

to extend its almost exclusively Japanese client list by capturing more

UK business.

Mary Leslie, a senior planner and associate director at Delaney Fletcher

Bozell, will boost the planning capability of the Japanese network’s

London agency in the wake of a recent management reshuffle.

’We are going to become much more aggressive in our new-business

programme,’ Michael Faust, a Hakuhodo associate director, claimed.

Leslie, whose most recent work has been on Delaney Fletcher’s

high-profile campaign for Triumph bras, has also been involved in new

product launches for Bristol-Myers and Oasis Forest holiday villages for

Rank.

Her arrival comes as Hakuhodo attempts to reinvent its London office to

reflect more closely its status as the world’s fourth-largest

network.

Last year, Hakuhodo reversed an earlier decision to concentrate

exclusively on its Japanese clients, which include Hitachi, Honda and

NEC, and to broaden its business base.

’We have clear strengths to exploit and there are a number of markets we

should be hitting,’ Faust said.

’Putting together the Japanese attention to detail and UK

account-handling skills makes a formidable combination. Mary will give

us some extra brain power,’ he added.

Leslie said: ’A move to Hakuhodo presents a great opportunity to work

with a new management team totally committed to developing the London

office.’
