BSkyB will appeal a customs and excise decision to impose VAT on its Sky

TV Guide at a tribunal hearing on 29 and 30 March. Sky has so far

managed to avoid paying tax on the Guide, which is distributed free to

all Sky TV subscribers, although it has a cover price of pounds 3.25.

Sky has in the past gained a zero tax rating because it counts the TV

Guide and its satellite and broadcasting subscriptions as two separate

products. If the decision goes against Sky, it could face a tax bill of

around pounds 24 million.



McCann-Erickson Manchester has made 12 redundancies and reduced its

television production department to one person as part of an agency

restructuring. Sue Little, the managing director, said the agency had

also created a number of new jobs and was ’shifting things round’.



Swatch has awarded its UK media account to CDP Media following a pitch

against New PHD’s second-string agency, Rocket. Carat was the incumbent

on the Swatch account until last year and had held on to Swatch UK media

buying since 1995 despite international centralisation into CIA

Medianetwork.



BTR Siebe has selected a shortlist of four agencies for its expected

multi-million pound launch advertising account (Campaign, last week).

The agencies included are the incumbent, Team Saatchi, Euro RSCG Wnek

Gosper, WCRS and J. Walter Thompson.



ONdigital is teaming up with the digital consortium, SDN, to launch

digital terrestrial pay-per-view services. The new operation will be

made available later this year offering viewers a range of sports,

movies and major events on a pay-as-you-go basis. ONdigital has also

signed off another pounds 30 million adspend to drive sales of its

set-top boxes.



The Association of British Insurers has shortlisted Zenith Media, New

PHD, MediaVest and BBJ Media Services for its savings and long-term risk

project, said to be worth pounds 15 million.



Circus has appointed two new associates. Sophie Webster joins from

Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, where she was account director on BT. Emma

Atkinson has been freelancing for clients including Adidas, Kiss FM and

the Blue Note Club.



MindShare has recruited a new director to head its Ford media account.

Jonathan Davies, a founder of the through-the-line agency, Dolphin, had

signed up to join Booth Lockett Makin as a planning director but pulled

out when he was offered the MindShare position.



The Charles Walls agency in Leeds is closing its media department and

will put all its media buying through MediaVest, which has handled the

agency’s broadcast work for the past two years. The change is not

expected to result in casualties among the four-strong department.



Haymarket, the publisher of Campaign, has acquired Human Resources

Magazine, the trade title for senior human resource and personnel

professionals, from Martin Leach Publishing Group for an undisclosed

sum.



A memorial service for Julie Bedwell, the former Procter & Gamble TV

production manager who died last August after a two-year battle against

cancer, will take place on 11 March at 12 noon at St Paul’s Church,

Covent Garden. Friends and colleagues are welcome to attend.
