The Rover group marketing director, Martin Runnacles, is understood to have left the company. The move follows news two weeks ago that Tom Purves, the company’s sales and marketing board director, is moving to the US to work on the BMW brands. Andy Blackford, a creative director at Joshua, has left the agency to

pursue a freelance career. Blackford took the position when Joshua was

set up, the result of a merger between Grey Integrated and Grey Direct,

of which he was the creative director.



Green Bohemia, the UK importer and distributor of the cult drink,

Absinthe, is looking for an ad agency, and claims to be in negotiations

with the actor, Johnny Depp, to be the face of the brand. A provisional

endline for the task - ’tonight we’re going to party like it’s 1899’ -

builds on Absinthe’s history as the drink for Victorian literary

bohemians.



Unilever is understood to have threatened to move some of its media

planning out of Initiative Media after a dispute over a management

issue. Initiative is Unilever’s media agency of record in the UK.



Chime Communications has revealed a 73 per cent leap in income to pounds

48.8 million and a 113 per cent surge in operating profit to pounds 7.8

million for the year ending 31 December 1998. The HHCL Group has

increased income by 23 per cent to pounds 16.5 million and operating

profits have risen by 34 per cent to pounds 3.9 million in the same

period.



Manning Gottlieb Media is understood to be in talks with Andrew Sharp,

the head of Initiative Media’s strategic communications and modelling

offshoot, Go Figure. Sharp’s possible appointment may spearhead the next

phase of MGM’s growth as it branches out beyond media planning and

buying.



The Sun is the latest big entrant into the free internet access market

with the launch on Tuesday of a new service, Currantbun.com. The launch

comes just a week after The Sun’s owner, News International, pulled out

of its joint venture online operation, LineOne, leaving BT and United

News & Media as the remaining partners.



Flextech is speaking to agencies about the creative ad account for its

UK Living channel, currently held by TBWA GGT Simons Palmer. The cable

company wants to move the channel away from its association with US chat

shows.



Sony is reviewing its pounds 50 million pan-European media planning and

buying as part of a wholesale review of its advertising account

(Campaign, 19 March). BMP OMD currently handles the US Sony media

business.



The organisers of the Cannes festival have announced the UK jurors for

this year’s event. Rosie Arnold, creative director at Bartle Bogle

Hegarty, and Richard Flintham, creative director at Fallon McElligott,

will sit on the film jury. Victoria Fallon, a copywriter at Abbott Mead

Vickers BBDO, will sit on the press and poster jury. James Hilton,

creative director at AKQA, and Marcus Vinton, creative director at

Ogilvy & Mather, will sit on the cyber lions jury.



Commercial General Union is poised to put its media account up for

review after completing a creative agency review. CIA Medianetwork was

awarded the pounds 8 million launch campaign for the newly merged

company last August.



Maiden Outdoor has turned in disappointing financial results for 1998,

which it attributed to advertisers withdrawing from the market during

last year’s World Cup. Pre-tax profits were down 56 per cent to pounds

4.47 million with acquisitions increasing sales by 3 per cent to pounds

65.3 million.
