Lindsay Masters, the chairman of Haymarket Group, announced his retirement on Wednesday. Masters, who founded Campaign along with Michael Heseltine in 1968, will remain a director of Haymarket Group, Haymarket Business Publications and Haymarket Magazines. Simon Tindall remains executive chairman of Haymarket Business Publications (including Haymarket Medical), Haymarket Exhibitions and group managing director. Michael Heseltine becomes the non-executive chairman of Haymarket Group. Masters commented: ’Campaign was my first launch and has remained my fondest baby’.

The Woolwich is preparing to review its pounds 10 million media planning

and buying account, now handled by MindShare, after seeing creative

pitches last Monday. Bartle Bogle Hegarty and Publicis pitched against

the incumbent, Ogilvy & Mather, for the creative account.



The Independent Television Commission has issued a formal warning

against Carlton and Granada for unreasonable discrimination against

BSkyB after the companies refused to carry a Sky Digital ad on their ITV

stations.



Initiative Media is rumoured to be looking for a senior executive to

work alongside the chairman, Tony Mainwearing, and the managing

director, Roy Jeans.



Jayne Barr, group managing director of Grey, has left the agency to join

Leagas Delaney as a board director. At Grey she was responsible for

running the health and beauty unit, including the Procter & Gamble

business.



The Interpublic Group has closed its Gotham agency in the UK. The agency

lost its key client, Yardley, when the company went into receivership

last year.



J. Walter Thompson is interviewing candidates to bolster its UK

management. Stephen Carter, the UK chief executive, is talking to

potential chairmen and managing directors for the agency.



Bates Dorland’s relationship with Heinz was dealt another blow this week

with Leo Burnett’s appointment to handle the pounds 2.5 million relaunch

of Heinz Salad Cream. Heinz is also reviewing its tinned product range

globally.



John Teal, the new ad director at the Daily Mail, has promoted the

agency sales manager, Mike Allen, to head of agency sales. He has also

moved the agency sales manager, Deanne Forrest, across to become Weekend

sales manager, and promoted Katryn Brogan from advertising manager on

Weekend to head of Weekend sales. The head of client sales post remains

vacant.



Food from Britain, the Government-backed body that helps UK food

manufacturers establish themselves in foreign markets, has picked da

Costa & Co as its first agency with a brief to encourage more companies

to use its consultancy services.



Regional Independent Media, the publisher of regional dailies including

The Yorkshire Post and a bidder for Mirror Group, has announced

operating profits of pounds 31.4 million, up 22.5 per cent, for the 12

months to December 1998.



A memorial service for Norman Icke, the Leo Burnett creative behind such

famous campaigns as Cadbury’s Flake and Milk Tray’s ’man in black’, will

take place on Monday 19 April at 3pm in St Martin in the Fields, St

Martin’s Lane, Trafalgar Square, London.



Campaign publishes a day early next week because of the Easter bank

holidays.



The next issue will be cover-dated 2 April and will be available in

London on Wednesday 31 March.
