operation to Ammirati Puris Lintas, and Western, the Lowe Group’s media

company, will each be given new branding this summer.



The Lowe Group has acquired a 70 per cent stake in the US agency,

Mullen.



Mullen’s senior management, including its founder and chief executive

officer, Jim Mullen, will remain with the agency, which will operate as

standalone brand. Mullen will report to Frank Lowe, chairman of the Lowe

Group.



Silvio Berlusconi, the controversial Italian media mogul and leader of

the political party, Forza Italia, will present the inaugural Media Lion

Grand Prix at this year’s International Advertising Festival in

Cannes.



He will also receive a special award in recognition of his career.



David McCall, the co-founder of New York’s McCaffrey & McCall agency,

acquired by Saatchi & Saatchi in 1983, has been killed in a car crash in

Albania. McCall, 71, and his wife, Penny, who also died, were on a

mission to aid Kosovo refugees on behalf the charity, Refugees

International.



Disney is looking for a direct marketing agency to promote its

attractions. An initial long list is thought to have been whittled down

to just two agencies. A result is expected within a week.



Safeway has extended its relationship with Bates UK by appointing the

group to handle the launch of its consumer website after a four-way

pitch.



Bates’ tenure of the pounds 18 million account had been called into

question after the merger of Safeway’s rival, Asda, with the Kingfisher

group, a Bates client.



Debenhams is holding two rounds of pitches with below-the-line agencies

for two distinct tasks. A search for an agency to handle a loyalty

scheme is at an initial credentials stage, while Debenhams has seen

full-scale pitches for a new account card.



The US business magazine, Newsweek, is talking to agencies with a view

to creating a TV campaign. The ads would run across Europe on selected

cable and satellite channels.



Dyno-Rod, the cleaning services company, has appointed the

through-the-line specialist, edge/gmc, to handle its pounds 2 million

account as part of plans to extend its services and advertising beyond

the consumer market and into the business sector.



The account, assigned without a pitch, was previously at CDP.



The Body Shop is talking to below-the-line agencies with a view to

launching a loyalty programme. An initial round of pitches will kick off

this week.



The Periodical Publishers Association has restated its determination to

maintain the current number of magazines reported by the National

Readership Survey, despite calls from newspaper groups to slash the

number. The PPA will meet with the Newspaper Publishers Association next

month to thrash out the issue.



Mars and Kodak have signed up to be official sponsors of the Millennium

Dome. The two advertisers have signed pounds 3 million sponsorship

packages for the right to market their products at the Dome.



Ascot Race Course has appointed The Marlow Agency following a six-way

creative pitch. The agency will create Ascot’s first branding campaign

around its summer racing calendar.



Gordon Drummond, the former sales director of Kiss FM and most recently

the managing director of the Brighton station, Surf 107, has moved to

GWR Group where he will be the business development director for local

sales. He will report to GWR’s new group local sales director, Wayne

Lowery.
