Express Newspapers has promoted Andy Jonesco to managing director

as part of a management shake-up that sees the former managing director,

Nicholas Rudd Jones, now heading United News & Media’s online

activities.

The news comes as Express Newspapers continues to battle against

declining circulation. Jonesco, who was the deputy managing director and

advertisement director of Express Newspapers, was promoted last Friday.

Industry observers suggest Rudd Jones has been sidelined as the Express

Group looks to reinvigorate its newspapers.

Richard Ogle, the head of classified advertising, becomes advertising

director, while Lindsay Cook, editorial development director, will

assume responsibility for the Scottish and Irish operations of Express

Newspapers. Paul Woolfenden, the commercial director, will also head up

the enterprises department.

Jonesco joined Express Newspapers in October 1996 from The Daily

Telegraph where he was sales director. He said: ’I’m excited about it. I

came here because Express Newspapers was always going to be a difficult

job and now I’ve got full control.’

Referring to Rudd Jones’s tenure on Express Newspapers, Clive Hollick,

the chief executive of UN&M, said: ’In his two years, Nicholas has

played a key role in strengthening the business, developing the

newspapers and successfully developing The Express and Daily Star brands

online.’
