Western International Media has poached Lawrence Janes, Carat’s

new-business director, to take charge of its new-business operation.

Janes will be given the new title of marketing and business development

director, and will work with Western’s managing director, Mike

Tunnicliffe, to develop and launch an internal and external marketing

programme.

’Western has been doing lots of things in the added-value areas such as

sponsorship and research,’ Tunnicliffe said, ’but we haven’t sold it

enough. We need someone who can exploit the potential, and Lawrence will

be running a new, very well-disciplined marketing programme.’

Janes said: ’There is a huge resource there, not only in the shape of

Interpublic Group but also in its research capabilities. My job is to

convert these resources into new-business opportunities.’

Tunnicliffe intended to carry out a repositioning when he took over as

Western’s managing director last year (Campaign, 10 July 1998), but was

immediately faced with a fight for Vauxhall’s pounds 86 million account.

Now that Western’s future on the account seems secure, Tunnicliffe is

free to put the changes into action. He said: ’We are positioning

ourselves to pitch against the likes of New PHD and Manning Gottlieb

Media - a full-service media offer, but leaning towards the strategic

end.’

Janes was at Carat for four years, originally joining YMG Carat as its

new-business manager. When YMG was folded into TMD Carat in January

1997, he took over the new-business brief at the merged agency.
