Between the Lines: Grey says farewell to legend

It's hard to imagine there will be another agency boss like Grey's Ed Meyer, who is set to retire at the end of the year (page 2). He is probably the last remaining link with Madison Avenue's high summer.

How will history judge Meyer? It will almost certainly marvel at his stamina (he worked at Grey for an astonishing 50 years) and total dedication to his work.

Under his command, Grey maintained an enviable ability to service complex accounts across international borders.

The downside is the management vacuum created within a network which Meyer embodied but which his pervasive leadership style was stifling.
