Lowe Group acquire digital consultancy

Formed last year the consultancy will operate as a standalone company within the Lowe Howard-Spink holding company, Lowe & Partners UK.

A spokeswoman for the Lowe Group said that, as a management consultancy, Decipher had a commercial emphasis rather than a marketing one and would provide strategic advice on issues such as how new technologies affect areas like product development and competition strategy.

Furthermore, its acquisition would not affect any plans Lowe Howard-Spink may have for the re-establishment of a digital division. Lowes closed down its London digital operation, Lowe Digital, in April, indicating at the time that it was planning to relaunch the division as a strategic consultancy. However, the expected appointment of a new head of the unit was never made.

Decipher was founded by Nigel Walley, a management consultant who spent a total of six years at telecoms consultancies, PFour Consulting and Putnam Hayes & Bartlett, before becoming marketing director of the Internet Service Provider, NTL Internet, the company behind VirginNet and Which?Online.

Tim Lindsay, the chairman of Lowe & Partners UK and also the chief executive of Lowe Howard-Spink, commented: "As a management consultancy, Decipher will be working with clients much earlier in the business cycle than an agency group, but on commercial issues very often raised by the agency. This offers an opportunity for both learning and collaboration between Decipher and Lowe & Partners UK at the strategic development stage."

Walley said: "Too often, advice on digital issues is being given by technology or web design companies looking to make a sale. As a standalone consultancy, Decipher will offer impartial business advice, interpreting both the commercial opportunities and the commercial threats posed by new digital technologies."
