Channel 4 continues to score highly with its post-9pm Friday night line-

up, with Friends as the lynch-pin of the schedule.

The popularity of the programme is proven by the fact that it’s often

cited as an example of the channel’s creeping commercialism. It

certainly does the numbers.

The prospect of a double helping of the show last Friday, complete with

a star-studded guest list which included Julia Roberts and Jean-Claude

Van Damme, was enough to get both viewers and advertisers drooling.

Six advertisers lined up for exposure in the break between the two

episodes: Wrangler, Libresse Bodyform, Sega Saturn, Boots, American

Express and Rover.

For Rover, the synergy between the ad’s New York theme and Friends made

a good fit. The fact that the bumper issue was a one-off special also

attracted the carmaker.

The show is generally a good vehicle for Wrangler because of its

popularity with 16- to 34-year-old light viewers.

Sega Saturn’s new ad campaign broke last week and the Friends special

was perfect timing, providing the best slot of the evening.
