Cumbrian Newspapers is to close its London sales office and

transfer national representation to Mediaforce.

The three sales staff, who are headed by David Kelsey, are to transfer

to Mediaforce. Chief executive Malcolm Denmark said the sales house

would be recruiting additional staff.

Cumbrian Newspapers publishes ten papers in the North-west, including

the daily News & Star in Carlisle, the North West Evening Mail in Barrow

and others such as Whitehaven News, Cumberland News and the Hexham

Courant.

Cumbrian Newspapers in London also represented the Oban Times and the

Tweedale Press and these will also move to Mediaforce. Tweedale Press

was acquired by Johnston Press last November for pounds 8 million.

Mediaforce won the business in a competitive pitch against Amra and

Clacksons.

Its regional portfolio and the fact that it has an Edinburgh office were

two factors that helped it win the contract.

Denmark commented: ’We are strong in Scotland, where we have all the

major weeklies plus Johnston’s titles on the borders, so these papers

will fit nicely into our sales portfolio.’

The titles will be sold by one of the two Mediaforce groups that handle

independent publishers.
