Mirror Group is extending its regional reach with an agreed pounds

279 million bid for the sixth largest regional newspaper group, Midland

Independent Newspapers.

The deal, subject to approval from the Monopolies and Mergers

Commission, will add 44 newspapers, including leading titles such the

Birmingham Post, and 34 specialist magazines to Mirror Group’s

portfolio.

The acquisition underlines Mirror Group’s objective to establish a

strong presence in UK regions, particularly the Midlands, where 10 per

cent of its newspapers are circulated. It is also seeking to extend its

cross-title advertising opportunities and integrate printing and

distribution.

David Montgomery, chief executive of Mirror Group, said he believed the

acquisition would lead to immediate savings of pounds 5 million.

MIN’s chief executive, Chris Oakley, is set to become a member of the

Mirror Group board and its chairman, Sir Norman Fowler, will chair a new

regional board for the Midlands.
