Barrington Johnson Lorains is setting up a direct arm, to be called BJL Direct. The division will be headed by the new managing director, Sandie Burtinshaw, who recently worked for Quadrant Advertising and Marketing, in Warrington, where she was head of direct marketing for both its business-to-business and consumer accounts.

Atkinson Courage Communications has recruited two specialists to work

for its sponsorship and broadcast clients, which include United

Distillers, the Federation Internationale de Volleyball, IBM, UPS and

the National Grid Company. Fiona Cohn and Hamish Goddard have joined in

the run-up to the 1996 Olympic Games, when ACC will be acting as a TV

adviser for the FIVB. ACC has also just completed a project for National

Grid in supporting the company’s umpires’ sponsorship at the recent

Cricket World Cup. Cohn has extensive experience in broadcast media,

sports marketing and event management and is a former producer for BBC

World Sports News and CNN Sports News. Hamish Goddard joins from F1

Chelsea, where he was the marketing co-ordinator responsible for

contracting and servicing all sponsors and managing PR programmes.



Craik Jones Watson Mitchell Voelkel has recruited a new account director

and account manager in the wake of its recent new-business wins. Paul

Sewards joins as the account director on Parcelforce. He was latterly a

senior account manager at Evans Hunt Scott, where he worked on the

consumer side of its Microsoft business. He has also worked for Momentum

- part of the AMV group - on the Citibank account, and for a number of

direct marketing agencies in Australia. Lisa Tobisch joins as account

manager on the Freemans account. As a business marketing graduate, she

gained production and account management experience at a small agency in

the heart of California’s ‘silicone valley’, where she worked on a

number of hi-tech accounts. She joins Craik Jones from Grey Integrated,

where she worked on Royal Mail, Avis Rent-a-Car and Penguin Electronics.



Richard Curtis has been promoted to the position of senior marketing

manager at the recently launched Whitbread Hotel Company. His key

responsibility will be to market Marriott Hotels within the company’s

portfolio, concentrating particularly on the its leisure and golf-breaks

programmes. Curtis joined the former Country Club Hotel Group two years

ago as marketing manager. Before that, he held a variety of marketing

positions at Whitbread Inns, over a four-year period. Before joining

Whitbread, Curtis worked for Allied Breweries.



Brian Poggi, the divisional vice-president, Europe, for the Polaroid

Corporation, Cambridge, Massachusetts, has been appointed vice-president

for Polaroid’s European marketing and sales operations and is relocating

to its European regional headquarters in Uxbridge, Middlesex. Poggi has

also been named as chairman of the board of Polaroid (UK), which

encompasses Polaroid’s UK marketing operations, located in

Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, and the company’s instant camera and film

manufacturing facility in Dumbarton, Scotland. In his new position,

Poggi will be responsible for the marketing and sales activities for

Polaroid’s instant and conventional cameras and films, electronic

imaging products and sunglasses throughout its established European

markets.



Linda Gray has been promoted to deputy editor of Good Housekeeping from

her position as associate editor.



Martin Broughton, the group chief executive and deputy chairman of BAT

Industries, has been appointed a vice-president of the Chartered

Institute of Marketing. As a chartered accountant, Broughton joined

British-American Tobacco in 1971 and worked in four continents, before

returning to London in 1974. He held a variety of financial positions

before moving to the group’s Brazilian subsidiary, Souza Cruz, in 1980,

and after four years was appointed finance director. A year later, he

moved to Eagle Star to become its first finance director. In 1988,

Broughton was appointed to the main board of BAT Industries as finance

director and from June 1989 until the following January he was chairman

of the Wiggins Teape Group. He was then a non-executive director until

its demerger from BAT Industries. In July 1992, Broughton was appointed

group managing director, financial services, and chairman of Eagle Star.

He became group chief executive and deputy chairman of BAT Industries in

April 1993.



David Terrill, HMV UK’s marketing director for the past eight years, is

to leave to take up the equivalent position at HMV Japan. Reporting

directly to HMV Japan’s managing director, Chris Walker, Terrill’s brief

will be to develop the marketing and product function at this

increasingly important profit centre within the HMV Group. Terrill has

been with HMV UK for 22 years, holding a number of key posts during this

time, including general manager at HMV’s prestigious 363 Oxford Street

store.
