Moving on up: Appointment at Associated New Media

Mark Milner has been appointed chief operating officer at Associated New Media (ANM), the digital publishing division of Associated Newspapers. He moves to the newly created position from his previous role as group commercial director and will continue to report directly to Andy Hart, managing director of ANM. Milner will lead the commercial and marketing teams, and oversee day-to-day operations. Mary McGregor, recently appointed as sales director, and marketing director Rob Cooke will both report to Milner. Before arriving at ANM three years ago, Milner headed up sales teams at Express Newspapers and Associated Newspapers, and he has more than 15 years' publishing experience overall.

What will your role involve?

My role is about bringing together all the work we do across the portfolio of sites on ANM, like the Evening Standard's site,, and The people reporting to me are the publishers of the Evening Standard's travel page, ThisisTravel, and its property web site, Homes & Property, as well as both the marketing director and sales director of ANM.

What attracted you to the role?

The role places me at the heart of all the operations within ANM. I get involved in the sales and marketing. There are four executive directors and I am still one of them.

What key learnings do you bring?

I've been in media for 15 years and I've been involved with ANM since April 2000. I am also a member of the leadership council of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), so I'm involved at industry level and am a member of the Association of Online Publishers (AOP).

What challenges face publishing online?

I think 'opportunities' is a more appropriate word - these are vast. Marketers are getting the message about the effectiveness of advertising online and not just in search.
