Nabs invites industry participants for fundraising walk in North Africa

People working in the communications industry are being invited to take part in a sponsored 60-mile trek across a remote part of North Africa to raise money for Nabs.

The charity is looking for 50 participants who will each commit to raising a minimum of £3,000 by trekking through the Central High Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

Several well-known figures from the industry are likely to take part in the trek, along with some of those who have been helped by Nabs in the past.

The trek, which will commence on 23 September and finish on 1 October, will take place in the region around Jebal M'Goun, North Africa's second-highest peak.

The area is inhabited by Berber tribesmen and their flocks. Until recently, they lived in virtual isolation from the rest of the world.

Staff from client companies, agencies, media independents, media owners, design and PR companies are being invited to take part. Senior industry figures who are interested in supporting the event can sponsor somebody to trek on their behalf.

The event is the brainchild of Miranda Kennett, the founder of First Class Coach, and Douglas McArthur, the chief executive of the Radio Advertising Bureau, who came up with the idea while they were trekking the Great Wall of China.

McArthur said: "Charity treks have a trio of benefits -they improve your fitness and health, you get to see a country as it really is, rather than as a tourist, and you get to help a charity help people less fortunate than yourself."

Kate Harris, the Nabs chief executive, said: "Nabs helped 3,000 people last year and we want to be able to go on providing that level of support."

Nabs estimates that it needs to raise at least £1.5 million every year in order to operate effectively.
