Advertising agencies are giving work to a wider range of solicitors, but three top law firms still lead the field, according to an authoritative guide for clients published this week.

Advertising agencies are giving work to a wider range of solicitors, but

three top law firms still lead the field, according to an authoritative

guide for clients published this week.

The guide, called The Legal 500, ranks Lewis Silkin, Macfarlanes and the

Simkins Partnership as the joint three leading law firms.

The rankings, which take account of confidential information about fees

and clients supplied by the law firms, are principally based on the

breadth of legal expertise. This includes commercial work and major

litigation as well as lower-fee tasks such as copy clearance.

The research revealed that most adland lawyers say that they are doing

more work for their advertising clients than they were this time last

year, a sign that the field is burgeoning as the economy picks up.

The guide singles out prominent individuals at law firms for their

expertise, including Roger Alexander and Stephen Groom at Lewis Silkin,

Charles Swan at the Simkins Partnership and William King at Macfarlanes.

Lewis Silkin has over the past six months advised Abbott Mead Vickers

BBDO on the acquisition of Fishburn Hedges, an pounds 18 million rights

issue, variations to the Freud Communications acquisition agreement, a

senior management share incentive scheme, and the pounds 15 million

takeover of Pattison Horswell Durden.

Macfarlanes was long associated with the Saatchi brothers, but remained

with Cordiant when they departed. It also has connections with Collett

Dickenson Pearce and Diversified Agency Services, part of Omnicom.

The Simkins Partnership acts for four of Campaign’s top seven agencies.
