NEWS: APL poaches Woolmington for global media job

Ammirati Puris Lintas has poached Paul Woolmington, the executive media director of Bozell Worldwide and the managing director of 20/20 Media, to take on the new role of worldwide strategic media director.

Ammirati Puris Lintas has poached Paul Woolmington, the executive media

director of Bozell Worldwide and the managing director of 20/20 Media,

to take on the new role of worldwide strategic media director.



The surprise appointment comes after two months of secret talks between

Woolmington and Martin Puris, APL’s worldwide chairman and chief

executive, and Mike Lotito, the chief media officer at APL in New York

and co-chairman of APL’s worldwide media board.



The move underlines APL’s determination to strengthen the in-house media

resource at each of its creative agencies, a strategy announced two

weeks ago. At the same time, Puris has announced that Initiative Media,

the agency’s European media network, would be expanding globally

(Campaign, 5 April).



Woolmington, who will be based at APL’s flagship New York offices, will

supervise a team of regional strategic media planning directors around

the world.



Puris said: ‘The appointment of Paul is a key step in the reorganisation

of APL’s worldwide media operation.’



He added: ‘Strategic thinking has got to be integrated with the creative

product. For a while there was a danger that it would move into

Initiative by accident. It can’t be separate and be good.’



Woolmington, who set up 20/20 Media, a joint venture between Bozell and

CIA, five years ago, said: ‘There is a sadness in leaving 20/20. But the

challenge to create the strongest media offer across the world couldn’t

be turned down.’



Winston Fletcher, Delaney Fletcher Bozell’s chairman, declined to

comment on who would succeed Woolmington.
