Capital Radio has signed its best-known DJ, Chris Tarrant, for another
three years, scotching speculation that he was poised to quit the
The newly negotiated deal means that all major Breakfast Show sponsors
are now likely to recommit to the station.
Cellnet has just signed a two-year pounds 2 million deal to sponsor the
traffic report bulletins, known as the ‘flying eye’. Meanwhile, Disney
and Mars are also set to sign-up shortly. In terms of sponsorship, the
entire Breakfast Show is worth some pounds 2.5 million a year.
Tarrant, who has been at Capital Radio for 13 years, said: ‘I never
expected to be here this long, I’m part of the heritage now.’ Asked if
he intended to renew his contract beyond the year 2000, he said: ‘It
would be weird to move.’
Martina King, station director at Capital, said: ‘Obviously we’re
delighted, especially since Chris is in such high demand and people have
tried to encourage him to move elsewhere.’
