Capital Radio has signed its best-known DJ, Chris Tarrant, for another

three years, scotching speculation that he was poised to quit the

station.

The newly negotiated deal means that all major Breakfast Show sponsors

are now likely to recommit to the station.

Cellnet has just signed a two-year pounds 2 million deal to sponsor the

traffic report bulletins, known as the ‘flying eye’. Meanwhile, Disney

and Mars are also set to sign-up shortly. In terms of sponsorship, the

entire Breakfast Show is worth some pounds 2.5 million a year.

Tarrant, who has been at Capital Radio for 13 years, said: ‘I never

expected to be here this long, I’m part of the heritage now.’ Asked if

he intended to renew his contract beyond the year 2000, he said: ‘It

would be weird to move.’

Martina King, station director at Capital, said: ‘Obviously we’re

delighted, especially since Chris is in such high demand and people have

tried to encourage him to move elsewhere.’
