NEWS: Carlton Sales set to work for satellite TV after takeover deal

Carlton UK Sales, the sales operation for Carlton and Central Television, is expected to begin selling its first non-terrestrial TV channel later this year.

Carlton UK Sales, the sales operation for Carlton and Central

Television, is expected to begin selling its first non-terrestrial TV

channel later this year.

Expansion of the Carlton sales house is likely following the acquisition

earlier this week of the cable channel, SelecTV, by Carlton Television.

Sales for the cable channel, currently handled by the cable TV sales

house, Wood Lynds, are now expected to come under the Carlton UK Sales

roof.

Martin Bowley, the managing director of Carlton UK Sales, said it was

too early to comment on detailed sales arrangements.

SelecTV, which is available in around one million homes across the

country, was launched as a platform for the eponymous production

company’s programming library.

Now Carlton plans to use the channel to broadcast its own material. This

will include Carlton productions such as Kavanagh QC, as well as Central

TV-made shows like Peak Practice. Central also has an extensive

programming library which includes old series of Soldier Soldier and

Sharpe.

Carlton’s first move into non-terrestrial broadcasting follows the

announcement last year that Granada Television is to launch a tranche of

satellite channels with BSkyB, including a Granada gold channel of old

shows.

Separately, SelecTV’s production facilities and programme catalogue have

been snapped up by Pearson and are set to be used by Pearson’s Channel 5

Broadcasting consortium for the fifth terrestrial TV channel, expected

to launch early next year.
