NEWS: Ex-editor of the Sun linked with launch of new sports daily

Kelvin Mackenzie, the managing director of Mirror TV, is believed to have secured financial backing for the launch of a daily sports newspaper.

Kelvin Mackenzie, the managing director of Mirror TV, is believed to

have secured financial backing for the launch of a daily sports

newspaper.

Mackenzie, who has stamped his identity on the Mirror Group’s cable

channel, Live TV, is understood to be keen to be his own boss. The

former editor of the Sun newspaper had an abortive period as managing

director of BSkyB and has yet to establish himself as a major player in

television.

Mirror TV insiders said Mackenzie was known to be a supporter of the

daily sports paper concept, but expressed surprise at the idea that he

would launch a title outside of the Mirror Group’s auspices.

Mackenzie denounced the story as ‘hogwash’, but well-placed sources said

he had wooed a mixture of private and City backers for the project, for

which a launch date of June has been pencilled in.

The project is one of several sports paper proposals currently in

preparation.
