- News International has reshuffled its tabloid marketing division, moving its marketing director Ellis Watson to the position of acting general manager of the company's new Internet Service Provider, Currant.Bun.com.
Clive Milner, general manager of News Group Newspapers will caretake Watson's role until a replacement is found. Sources close to News International believe that the newspaper group will look outside the company for a suitable candidate.
Milner said: "Ellis's strengths as a marketer were used to conceive and make the Bun. The company has to look into the future and let him turn an amazing launch into a profitable enterprise. He can't do the two jobs for much longer and we're now looking in and out of the company for his successor on the newspapers."
Watson has overseen marketing for The Sun and the News of the World since 1995. He has also headed up the Currant Bun project, launched two weeks ago, since its conception last December.
The service provides Sun readers with internet access, e-mail functions, on-line sections of The Sun and internet shopping facilities. The unveiling of CurrantBun coincided with the launch of a similar service by rival newspaper publisher, Mirror Group, under the brand name ic24.co.uk.
The colourful Watson commented: "I'm enormously excited and I have very strong pants. The expectations of the group are greater than they were for marketing the newspapers - that's why I need strong pants."
