David Lees, Talk Radio’s former UK sales director, has re-emerged as a
director at Radio First, a new City-backed radio investment and
Lees joins the publicly quoted Radio First as operations director in
October, in the run-up to major bids for two existing regional stations.
The company also intends to pitch for the regional East of England radio
licence. It already controls Mellow 1557 in Colchester, which is being
used to launch the East of England bid.
Lees has been on gardening leave since March when he left Talk Radio
after less than a year in the job. He quit the station following the
decision of CLT Radio, the owners of Talk, to set up a combined sales
house serving Talk and its sister station, Atlantic 252.
According to Lees, his appointment will allow him to apply his 20 years
of radio experience in a market that is just starting to open up. ‘There
are a large number of opportunities as some of the bigger groups divest
themselves of regional stations. We hope to benefit by combining the
five key areas of technical and programming expertise, research, sales
Lees began his career in radio in 1978 at Radio Luxembourg before moving
to Capital Radio where he rose to the position of sales director in
1990. He left in 1993 for a two-year stint at Metro Radio Group and
joined Talk last year.
