NEWS: Radio First signs up Lees as sales chief of broadcast group

David Lees, Talk Radio’s former UK sales director, has re-emerged as a director at Radio First, a new City-backed radio investment and operations company.

David Lees, Talk Radio’s former UK sales director, has re-emerged as a

director at Radio First, a new City-backed radio investment and

operations company.

Lees joins the publicly quoted Radio First as operations director in

October, in the run-up to major bids for two existing regional stations.

The company also intends to pitch for the regional East of England radio

licence. It already controls Mellow 1557 in Colchester, which is being

used to launch the East of England bid.

Lees has been on gardening leave since March when he left Talk Radio

after less than a year in the job. He quit the station following the

decision of CLT Radio, the owners of Talk, to set up a combined sales

house serving Talk and its sister station, Atlantic 252.

According to Lees, his appointment will allow him to apply his 20 years

of radio experience in a market that is just starting to open up. ‘There

are a large number of opportunities as some of the bigger groups divest

themselves of regional stations. We hope to benefit by combining the

five key areas of technical and programming expertise, research, sales

and marketing.’

Lees began his career in radio in 1978 at Radio Luxembourg before moving

to Capital Radio where he rose to the position of sales director in

1990. He left in 1993 for a two-year stint at Metro Radio Group and

joined Talk last year.
