NEWS: Sporting Life to face new rival with focus on gambling sector

A new daily sports newspaper with a strong bias towards horse and

greyhound racing is to launch on 12 August.

Sports Punter, which will be London-oriented, is hoping that its

detailed form and race-card information for the following day’s races

will become a winning formula in a market dominated by Mirror Group’s

Sporting Life.

The five-day Monday to Friday operation will launch with a print run of

one million and expects a settle-down circulation of 500,000. It will

have about 36 pages, with a substantially larger Friday edition for the

weekend.

Three-quarters of the paper will be dedicated to horse and greyhound

racing, while the rest will cover a wide variety of sports. The

editorial is to be provided by PA Sport, the sports arm of the Press

Association.

Sports Punter will be distributed through bookmakers, newsagents and 300

subway and station vendors.

Frank Daly, marketing director of Sports Punter, said: ‘The detailed

information we will offer is something that is not being provided, and

there is a big market for that.’

MediaCom’s deputy chairman, Bill Jones, commented: ‘The crucial thing

will be to convert the betting shops to the new title. Without that, I

can’t see the sales being robust enough.’
