- The Independent on Sunday newspaper is organising a mass march for the decriminalisation of cannabis in what it sees as the pinnacle of its six month campaign to legalise the drug.

The march will take place through central London on 28 March culminating in a rally in Trafalgar Square, where speakers including Independent on Sunday editor Rosie Boycott will address the demonstrators.

The paper's campaign has received support from academics, politicians and, most notably it claims, much of the medical profession.

Boycott said: "Thousands of ordinary law abiding people throughout the country have already supported the campaign and we are hoping they will turn out in big numbers to show the Government the depth of public feeling about this whole issue. The majority of people who smoke cannabis do so for a number of reasons, either social or medical."
