Newsquest has made another incursion into Southnews’s territory by
adding the newly launched Ealing Times to its Uxbridge Times series in
Harrow, Hillingdon and Hendon.
The freesheet is targeting the advertising community in North-west
London, which covers 200,000 homes. The 32-page first issue launched
last week with a distribution of 60,000.
To accommodate the new title, the Times series’ advertising team, headed
by group advertisement manager Sandra Rowland, has been expanded by the
recruitment of six field sales representatives and three telesales
The new recruits have raised the total sales force to nearly 80. The
team will also sell packages with the long-established Hendon Times,
which has its own sales force.
Sales efforts will focus on local display advertising - mainly in the
retail sector -and classified recruitment.
Newsquest hopes to grow the Ealing newspaper along the lines of the
Hillingdon Times, which launched six months ago and has grown to 40
pages, and the three-year-old Harrow Times, which boasts 128 pages.
To meet the threat from Newsquest, Southnews intends to double the
distribution of its free Ealing Informer next week to 60,000.
Southnews publishes four papers in Ealing with a total distribution of
280,000, including the paid-for Ealing & Acton Gazette.
Newsquest chairman Jim Brown said: ’We indicated when we introduced the
Times series into Uxbridge that we would seek to develop the product,
and Ealing is our next stop.
’We intend to look for even more opportunities in the London area.’
